Genesis Laboratory

The Genesis project focuses on repurposing century-old structures in Kopergaon, Maharashtra, adapting them to new functions amid changing agrarian landscapes. The Godavari Sugar Mills at Sakarwadi exemplifies this transformation, repurposing sheds into research labs and offices. Initially targeting a 100-year-old granary shed, the design retrofit included laboratory and office spaces. Navigational gestures around the shed guide movement, utilizing original stone walls and repurposed materials like steel plates and bamboo. A steel canopy marks the entry, while wooden trusses covered in bamboo create a focal point. Inside, laboratory programs surround an interior courtyard, illuminated by skylights. The project showcases the potential for adaptive reuse in rural India, referencing tradition without cliché.
